I have heard of and knew about Podcasting before this
assignment, but I was unaware of exactly how it worked. After watching the
video “Podcasting in Plain English” I learned a lot about what podcasting is,
how it works, and how it is so beneficial to use. I learned that Podcasting comes from the words
iPod and broadcasting combined together, but is not limited to just an iPod. I
also learned about subscriptions. I was
unaware that you could hit “subscribe” on a website with a podcast and receive future
shows automatically by having something called a pod catcher. The pod catcher allows
you to access the shows and watch them when and where you want. Podcasting
would be a great tool to use in the classroom. Podcast can allow you share
information, upcoming assignments, lessons, and lectures with the students.
Also, podcast keeps students from falling behind. If a student is absent, they
can simply go listen to the lecture, lesson, and assignment they missed for
that day.
I think Podcasting is very similar to other Web 2.0
applications we have learned about. Web 2.0 tools such as Wikis, Social
Bookmarking, and Voice Threads are all tools that can be used for online
communication, information, and interaction. Web 2.0 tools we discussed in a
previous assignment were tools to create easy ways to access and share
information with others. Podcasting does the same thing. Both Podcasting and
Web 2.0 tools we have talked about can be very beneficial when used in
education for teachers and also for the students. One way Podcasting is a
little different than the Web 2.0 tools we have discussed is that Podcasting allows
you to subscribe to a favorite podcast website and receive future shows
automatically. While Wikis, Social Bookmarking, and Voice Thread are not automatically
transferred. Wikis, Social Bookmarking, Voice Threads, and Podcast are all
useful tools that can benefit education when used properly.
I have had an iPod for as long as I can remember. I use my
iPod touch every single day. For the most part, I use it to play music when I
exercise. I also use it to play games,
and also use it to get on the internet when I have Wi-Fi. I think using an iPod
in the classroom is such a great idea and I would love to use it in my
classroom one day. In my future classroom, I hope to use Podcasting for
uploading classroom lessons online. This way, students can access lectures,
lessons, and upcoming assignments. There are many advantages to online
communication tools. Since all students learn differently and at different
paces, podcasting is a great way for students to access the information they
need and listen to it at their own pace. Another advantage for the students is
that they can download the lessons onto devices that they can carry and use
anywhere such as at home or on the bus. A disadvantage to online communication
is that some students may not have access to a device such as an iPod. Another
disadvantage of online communication is that students may not have access to
the internet at home.
I agree with you Bethany! I believe that using a IPad or any other kind of technology in the classroom is a great tool for students to learn with. I also agree with you on your advantage and disadvantages. I believe that students having access to the internet and being able to download their homework, watch videos on how-to, and having a chat for that the students can help other students on how to do the home. But there is always that disadvantage that not every students has access to the internet.
ReplyDeleteBethany,
ReplyDeleteLike you, I was familiar with podcasting but I didn’t really know a whole lot about it. I too, thought it just pertained to iPods, iPads, etc. This tool can definitely be helpful in the classroom. You mentioned that not all kids have access to the internet, and this could present a problem. I agree and would like to add that a lot of kids don’t have the technology to utilize this tool as well. Even if they were to go to the library, they don’t have the affordance of being knowledgeable about how to use the computer or the internet and its vast amount of resources.
Hi Bethany, yes I too was familiar with the term and some of its functionality, but still it was neat to learn of all its capabilities. It's pretty amazing what can be done with podcasts! I agree, using any technological tool (I'm not an "i" person) in class can be beneficial and something we are already exposed to but perhaps don't realize it. For example, as we do this course online, we are, without a doubt, utilizing a form of podcasting. This is how we're able to communicate with our instructor and each other, and h ow we're able to retrieve our assignments and so on...
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say - I love that we're able to learn, communicate, and get an education "on the go". Also, it's pretty cool that we use a lot of these tools, use them well, and don't realize the terms (perhaps) or that we participate in this :)
I liked your podcast, thank you for sharing! :)
Hello Bethany, I was not that familiar with podcasting and honestly I do not know if I have heard about it or not until now. But I'm glad I have knowledge about it now, because it sounds like a good tool to use. I agree with everything you said especially the part about this tool will keep the students ahead and not fall behind, because all they have to do is pull up the lesson for the day that they missed. I can honestly see my class using a lot of the tools we have discussed and talked about in this class. I'm so glad I took this online course.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information it was very helpful.
I also have heard of podcasting before but I had no idea what it was. It does sound like a very useful technology and I Iike the way you explain how it works. I use to have an ipod a long time ago, but I never knew that I could listen to podcasts with it. I used my ipod for very similar ways that you did. I agree with you on using the podcasts to put lessons online. I like that you mentioned that it helps students work at their own pace, I didn't even think about that. The disadvantages you mentioned are very common in rural areas for younger students. That is why teachers can't depend in podcasts. After all, there is no replacement for the teacher themselves.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post.
